About the Hawaii
Rangelands Site
Welcome to the Hawaii Rangelands web site! It is
being developed by an interdisciplinary team at University of Hawaii at
Manoa.
This web site is maintained by the Hawaii Rangelands Project Team,
composed of rangeland experts, cooperative extension professionals, and
a librarian. The Hawaii Rangelands web site is a selective, centralized
resource with an integrated interface. The Hawaii Rangelands project is
partially funded by the CTAHR Beef Initiative.
We are participants in Rangelands West,
which is a collaborative effort among Western Land Grant Universities
to create an electronic network that will provide seamless access to
distributed sources of rangeland information. Rangelands West is a
partner in AgNIC,
a national effort to create an electronic network
that will provide seamless access to distributed sources of
agricultural information, subject area specialists, and other resources
in a manner in which the physical location of these resources is
transparent to the user.
Mission
Our mission is to provide electronic access to
grazing land information and rangeland management resources related to
Hawaii and the Pacific. Links from the Hawaii Rangelands Web site also
provide access to other Western United States rangeland information.
Scope of Subject
Rangeland is land on which the vegetation is
predominantly grasses, grass-like plants, forbs, or shrubs. It includes
lands revegetated naturally or artificially that are managed like
native vegetation. Rangelands include grasslands, shrublands,
woodlands, savannahs, tundra, most deserts, and riparian and wetland
plant communities including marshes and wet meadows. (From Rangelands
and How They Work)
